Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is the largest E-Commerce company in the world. Alibaba released a voice assistant speaker Tmall Genie, marking its first foray into artificially intelligent home devices.
The “Tmall Genie”, named after the group’s online platform Tmall, costs US$73.4, significantly less than similar devices from western counterparts such as Amazon and Google, whose offerings range from US$120 to US$180, Reuters reports.Tmall Genie offers more functionality than Amazon Echo Speakers including smart home control, weather, news, music speakers and other wide range of functionality.
Tmall Genie can be activated by voice commands to perform tasks such as searching for weather reports, controlling smartphone.Tmall Genie is programmed to use Mandarin as its language and will only be available in China. It is activated when a recognized user says “Tmall Genie” in Chinese
From a hardware perspective, the Tmal”Genie looks similar to the Echo as well. It’s a black cylinder with a downward-facing light ring that illuminates the base of the device when activated.
The Tmall Genie is launching in a limited beta for ¥499 (roughly Rs 4,780).
